DIY Message Door Mat

Hello everyone!
The other day I saw this cute door mat online and knew that I had to have it!
But forty bucks is a little too much for me to spend on a door mat...
So, I decided to make my own.

You will need:
Paint
Foam Paint Brush

Select a message.
I loved "Hello Pumpkin" from the original door mat and it's perfect for this time of year.
I have seen so many other cute sayings.

Hello
Shut the Front Door
Home Sweet Home
Come Back When You Have Pizza

Choose one to express your personality.
Place your stencils on the mat and position to your liking.
Hold the stencil securely with one hand.
With the other, saturate your paint brush in the paint and gently dab onto the stencils.
The mat will soak up a lot of paint so don't be afraid to be generous.
Continue until you have your desired saying in place.
Remove your stencils.
Let dry completely.
Place at your doorstep.
Enjoy all the compliments!

I love how this mat turned out.
I am so excited to have it on my porch for the remainder of fall.
It was so fast and cheap to complete on my own and I think it turned out just as cute as the original.
What saying would you have on your door mat?

We're Going On ANOTHER Cruise?

Friday September 7th - Sunday September 9th

Erik and I went on another cruise to celebrate our five year wedding anniversary!
The first few days weren't too eventful.
They involved a lot of travel and catching up on sleep.
Have you ever been on a cruise?
Where did you go?

My Monday | You Can't Do It Alone

Hello everyone!
This past weekend I had a hard day...
There was no particular reason.
I just woke up to it.
All of these negative thoughts were running through my head.
Telling me I wasn't enough.
Telling me I didn't deserve what I had.
Telling me that my goals were pointless.
After awhile Erik noticed I was a little off.
He asked me if everything was okay.
I didn't tell him what was wrong right away.
I honestly didn't know at first.
When I did, I didn't know how to explain it.
I also didn't want to.
It's hard to share your insecurities and hear them spoken out loud.
I finally told Erik what was going on.
He sat down with me and we talked it through.
He encouraged me and reminded me that I was loved.
But the thoughts still loomed.
We continued on with our day.
After awhile Erik came down stairs dressed and said "I am taking you out. All this work is not good for you."
I tried to resist, like I usually do, but I had already gotten most of my work done and we had no plans that evening.
So, to the movies we went.
Erik treated me exceptionally well.
He bought me expensive candy, opened every door for me and showered me with compliments.
It was exactly what I needed.
To turn my brain off and not worry about the world for a bit.

I have a hard time asking for help.
Any type of help.
Asking for favors.
Asking someone to hand me something.
Asking for help when I have bitten off more than I can chew.
I especially struggle when it's related to my mental health.
You can't do it alone.
You need the support and strength of others.
I am reminded of that often.
And I hope that you are too.
If not, here is your reminder.
It is not a weakness to need help.
It is a strength to be brave enough to ask for it.

Unicorn Sugar Cookies + Grandma's Sugar Cookie Recipe

Hello everyone!
My youngest niece just celebrated her first birthday.
Her older sister decided she needed to have a unicorn party.
I won't lie when I say I am loving that unicorns are so hot right now.
So, I offered to make unicorn sugar cookies.
Using my Grandma's amazing sugar cookie recipe of course.

You will need:
3 Cups of Flour
1 Cup of Sugar
1 Teaspoon of Salt
1 Cup of Shortening
1 Egg
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
3/4 a Cup of Milk

Preheat oven to 375o.
Mix flour, sugar, salt and shortening until a crumbly mixture forms.
Add in the egg, vanilla and milk and mix until well combined.

The great thing about my Grandma's sugar cookie recipe is that these cookies rise and form huge fluffy cookies.
I wanted to try to get them to expand a little less, for decorating purposes only!
So, once the dough was complete I formed it into a flat disk and stuck it in the fridge to chill for an hour.
Once I had my shapes cut out I placed them on a cookie sheet and into the freezer for ten minutes before baking.
If you are not worried about your cookies expanding feel free to skip these steps.

Roll out dough on a floured surface.
Cut into desired shapes.
Place shapes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8 - 10 minutes.
Let cool.
Decorate.

I went super easy mode and just used buttercream frosting for my cookies.
I love the look of royal icing but am all about easy decorating, especially for a crowd.
I spread a thin layer of buttercream frosting over the entire cookie.
Added gold sanding sugar to the horn for some magic.
Using colored buttercream frosting and a star tip I piped the mane on.
For some extra sparkle I added white sanding sugar on top.

Enjoy!

I love how these turned out!
They are so cute and without much hassle.
Not to mention the cookies are delicious...
What do you think of the unicorn trend?
Love it? Or leave it?

My Monday | No One Is You

Hello everyone!
I'll be honest when I say that I have spent a good majority of my life trying to be someone else.
Trying to be prettier, smarter, braver.
It took me years to figure out that I was already what I needed to be.

| via |

It's so hard to be comfortable in your own skin these days.
We are constantly told what we should and should not be.
We are expected to fit into an unachievable mold of perfection.
Anything that does not fit into the mold is labeled as "weird" or "wrong."
I have finally gotten to a place where I am comfortable with my imperfections.
I realized that what I had been trying to hide from the world was what I should be sharing with it.
We are all so different and have something valuable to offer.
What we think of as our weaknesses can be our biggest strengths.
Be proud that you are shy, stubborn, assertive, or reserved.
Be proud that you talk to your pets, have an obsession with unicorns or have a lot of random knowledge about cartoons.
The sooner you accept yourself the sooner you can share your gifts with the world.
So, hurry up!
We are waiting for you.

All my love,
Autumn

5 Things I've Learned In Five Years Of Marriage

Hello everyone!
Erik and I celebrated five years of marriage yesterday.
After five years of marriage and ten years together I like to think that we know a thing or two about relationships.
I thought it would be fun to share five things we have learned in our five years of marriage.

Communication, Communication, Communication
Communication is important in any relationship but especially in a marriage.
It can be hard to constantly communicate especially if you are like me and tend to shut down or are like Erik and need to distance yourself from a heated situation to gather your thoughts.
It is crucial to talk to each other.
Especially during those heated moments.
Even if you have to come back to it later.
Just make sure you actually do.

Speak Their Love Language
If you have not heard of the five love languages I would highly suggest you hop over here and find yours out.
A love language is how someone needs to receive love.
It is important to know your significant other's love language,
It will help you understand them better as a person and understand what they need.
Mine are quality time and gifts.
Erik's are physical touch and words of affirmation.
I try to show Erik physical affection even though it's very much not my love language.
I know it will make him feel loved and that will bring us closer together.

Always Have Savings
I feel like this is a good piece of advice for life in general.
Erik and I had a few very bad first days of marriage.
They consisted of our car breaking down, getting stranded in a small town on our way to our honeymoon and spending thousands of dollars...
From our first day of marriage we decided to set aside a certain percent of our paychecks into savings.
It has been a life saver!
A lot of stress can come from finances in a relationship.
Having a savings account can help eliminate some of that stress and give you more options than gaining more debt.
Erik and I have faced several more trials after our first few days of marriage and it has always been nice to have a safety net to fall back on.

Continue To Date Each Other
Erik and I have crazy opposite schedules.
That's why we set aside time for a date at least once a week.
It isn't always a "fancy" date.
Many times it's sitting at home, ordering in food and bingeing a new show.
After a long hard week out in the world, there's nothing we want more than to be at home.
But we also try to shake things up and go out and try new things.
Whatever we need and whatever fits into our schedule we make it happen.

Spend Time Apart
What?!
A lot of people are surprised when I offer this piece of advice.
I love Erik and I love spending any and all time I have with him,
But over the years I have learned the importance of spending time apart.
When people enter a relationship it is easy to get lost in it.
I think it is really important to remember to be your own person.
Just because you are in a relationship does not mean that is all you are.
Erik and I have our own hobbies, our own interests and our own friends.
Because of this we have many opportunities to experience things we enjoy with other people.
Spending time apart gives us time to grow individually and to actually miss each other.
Whenever I come home from a night out or a weekend away I am so relieved to be back with Erik and always have a new found appreciation for him.

The past five years haven't been perfect but they have been wonderful with Erik by my side.
I am so grateful for him and look forward to eighty more years together!
I hope these pieces of advice were helpful.
Do you have any pieces of advice to share?

All my love,
Autumn

My Monday | This Too Shall Pass

Hello everyone!
I can't believe we have made it to September.
I honestly can't believe I made it through this year at all.
I started it off broken, hurt and confused.
The first part of the year seemed to drag on forever and I never thought that I would never be able to feel normal again.

| via |

I am happy to say that I found my way out of that dark place.
It really seemed impossible at first but here we are.
I am happy, hopeful and excited for the future once again.
Wherever you are, whatever you are going through I want you to know that it will pass.
Don't give up.
Keep fighting even though it is so hard.
Keep moving forward even if it feels like you aren't moving fast enough.
Give yourself time to heal, cope, grieve whatever it is you need to do and I promise you it will get better.
You will get better.

All my love,
Autumn

Homemade Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie

Hello everyone!
Fall is just around the corner.
One of my favorite things to do in the fall is bake.
There is nothing more satisfying than the cool crisp weather and a cozy house filled with the smell of warm goodies.
Today I am going to share this chocolate chip skillet cookie.
It is one of our favorites to whip up to satisfy those sweet cravings.

You will need:
1 Stick of Butter
1/2 a Cup of Brown Sugar
1/4 a Cup of Sugar
2 Teaspoons of Vanilla
1 Large Egg
1 Large Egg Yolk
1 and 1/2 Cups of Flour
1 Teaspoon of Baking Soda
1/4 a Teaspoon of Salt
1 Cup of Chocolate Chips
Ice cream, Optional

Preheat Oven to 350o.
In a nine inch cast iron skillet melt the butter on the stove over medium heat.
Stir consistently until the butter becomes golden brown.
Whisk in sugar, brown sugar and vanilla.
Remove skillet from heat and allow to cool for five minutes.
This will ensure the eggs don't start to cook in your batter.
Add in the egg and egg yolk and whisk gently until well combined.
Add flour, baking soda, and salt stirring until just incorporated.
Fold in your favorite chocolate chips.
Spread the dough evenly across the skillet.
Bake for 18 - 20 minutes until edges begin to turn golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Let cool.
Top with ice cream, optional.
Enjoy!

This has been one of our favorite go to desserts for years now.
It is quick, easy and tastes delicious.
We always end up eating until our stomach hurts and it is well worth it!
The dough is a perfect base to turn this into any cookie you want.
Add in M&M's, Peanut Butter Cups, Sprinkles, whatever you'd prefer!
Have you had a skillet cookie before?

Autumn

My Monday | Little By Little

Hello everyone!
This week Erik and I will be heading out on a cruise to celebrate our five year wedding anniversary.
Woot! Woot!
I wish I could tell you that we are the people who can just book a vacation without a second thought but we most definitely are not.
Whenever Erik and I accomplish something I have always had people ask me how we do it.
How do we afford it?
How do we find the time?
What's the secret?
Well the answer, however boring it may be, is that we plan and save.

| via |

Erik and I used to celebrate our anniversary at a family cabin each year.
It was free and less than an hour away.
After a few years of this I asked Erik if we could start saving for an actual out of town vacation.
The cabin was nice and all but I wanted to be a little more adventurous.
So, we made a game plan.
We created a savings account specifically for vacation savings and transferred a certain amount per paycheck into it.
It took a bit of time to actually get what we needed for a vacation in there but we eventually got it done and were able to go on our first cruise for our three year wedding anniversary.
Whenever I tell people our "secret" of planning and saving they are immediately disappointed.
They don't want to wait.
They don't want to save.
They want what they want and they want it now.
Everything Erik and I have accomplished has been done over time.

This Blog.
Purchasing our house.
Erik's soon to be college degree.

The process has been slow but we have gotten places.
Little steps now mean bigs steps in the future.
So, get to it!

All my love,
Autumn

3 Spray Paint Office Upgrades

Hello everyone!
Every year around back to school time I get inspired to work on my office.
This year I wanted to update a few pieces and make them my own.

The first piece was this Ikea Cube Shelf.

I swear everyone and their dog has one.
That didn't stop me from wanting my own but I did want to add something to it.
I soon realized that the spot in my office I had set aside for this piece is where the vent was located on the floor.
With a south facing room I NEED my air conditioning.
So, I thought why not add some legs to it?
I bought these legs from Home Depot.
I didn't want the tips on the end and actually wanted them to be just a tad shorter.
I knew that if we cut off the tips I would have the look I wanted so we purchased them.
Erik removed the tips with a band saw and I sanded down the rough edges.
Then I applied a few coats of gold spray paint.
We added Top Plates to the four corners of the bottom of the shelf and screwed the legs in.

Bada bing! Bada boom!

The next pieces are these file boxes.
I got these from Target a few years ago and love them.

They are perfect for keeping my important documents safe, easy to reach and organized.
When I originally bought them I had a different vision for my office.
The color is so universal that they would have still worked in my new office but I wanted to add some color.
I taped off the small details I didn't want to paint over and gave the file boxes a few coats of navy spray paint.

And just like that they went from drab to fab!

The final piece was this Ikea desk I have had for a few years.

After getting a new vision for my office I new I wanted to upgrade this simple desk.
I easily removed the top of the desk from the legs and gave the legs a good spray paint of gold.

And just like that it looks like a new piece!
Super simple, quick and easy.

I am so excited that my little space is slowly coming together.
I can't wait to share more of my ideas as they come to life.
Do you have a creative space of your own?

All my love,
Autumn
